Every release of a recording of Telemann’s orchestral suites reinforces our admiration for his inventiveness and unfailing gift for ingratiating melody. With two projects underway, on Brilliant (modern instruments) and Caro Mitis (period instruments), to record all of the orchestral suites, we are truly living in a Telemann paradise. In the meantime, other companies continue to issue recordings of the orchestral suites at an encouraging pace.
Carin van Heerden, a founding member of L’Orfeo Barockorchester (generally under the leadership of violinist Michi Goigg, who performs here as part of the ensemble), takes on multiple tasks for this recording. Aside from conducting the ensemble, she is soloist in all three suites, joined in the suite for two oboes by ensemble member Wolfgang Day.
The only one of these suites familiar to me is the Overture in A Minor for Recorder and Strings, which has been issued by Brilliant as part of its complete overtures project. Both recordings take a very similar approach to the music, with almost identical timings. The main differences between the two can be set down to the instruments used. The modern instruments of Brilliant’s ensemble produce a brighter and softer sound than L’Orfeo at a higher pitch. L’Orfeo’s playing is just a bit sharper than Brilliant’s group, bringing out the character of the music to a greater extent. Also, because of inclusion of repeated material, L’Orfeo’s “Ouverture” lasts almost twice as long.
There is some doubt as to what Telemann meant by his designation of “flute pastorelle” for the E♭ Suite. Van Heerden chose the quarflöte because its “rustical character conveys itself particularly well in the range of the flat keys.” This suite has been recorded before, by Ensemble Rebel on a Dorian disc. I have not heard it, and it appears to have escaped notice in Fanfare. But I cannot imagine that performance to be any better than the one here. The third suite on this recording is not currently available elsewhere, and may be a recording premiere. All three suites receive lively, colorful performances that should have your toes tapping in no time. If you wish to sample Telemann’s suites, you will find this a good place to start. arkivmusic
